The First Baptist Church of South Londonderry is asking for your help and
support. In August of 2010 our Historic Church Building was completely destroyed in a fire. This brick building that stood on the hill for 176 years was a beacon for South Londonderry, with its steeple rising through the trees. While we have mourned and reminisced over the loss of our building, our church is strong and growing. We are even more excited about the future.
Our Building Committee, working with the architects of Robert Carl Williams Associates, has completed the design for our new church. The church building will be similar to our old building with its steeple, stained glass windows, and brick exterior. We are planning on purchasing the adjacent house and property on the hill behind the church and removing the building and hill. This addition of property will give us and the town added parking as well as a green space for a playground. Please take a look at our building and site plans on our website at www.firstbaptistlondonderryvt.org.
While we are and always will be the First Baptist Church, we envision our building as a community church. It is designed as a place for group meetings, community meals, and a meeting place for youth groups. With our added bathrooms, showers, and a generator to run the building in times of power outages, we feel that our building will be used as a shelter in times of need. We don’t want this building to be used just on Sundays!
We have a little over a million dollars in fire insurance money to get us started, but it is not nearly enough. Our initial dream plans exceeded our means, so we have already scaled back our original plans. Currently our building plan is to leave parts of the building unfinished including the second story and portions of the basement. We are, therefore, announcing our three year Capital Campaign to raise $500,000. We have already received $36,219 in donations since the fire, so we have $463,781 to go. With this amount the church can be furnished and completed. Please consider how you can help us, as well as help the community, so that we all can have a fantastic future.
To donate, you may send a check to The First Baptist Church, PO Box 278, South Londonderry, Vt 05155 or visit our website: www.firstbaptistlondonderryvt.org
Thank you for your support in helping our church community grow and prosper. We look forward to having a wonderful building to help us serve you.
